My dear Joan,
Thank you very much for your lovely letter. As Daddy has told you, we couldn’t give Hitler our land – we think he’s greedy and he treats his people badly – and he’s so greedy he wants it all! Who do you think I met this afternoon? Diana Woodcock! And she asked how you were getting on, as everybody does. She says she might write to you, and if she does I will enclose it with one of mine. She likes the school at Whitefriars and they do fraction sums and long division now. Do you do those yet?
Auntie Olive came unexpectedly this afternoon and Nanny has gone back with her to Ilford(1). She thinks Uncle John might have a weekend leave from the army and knows Nanny would want to see him, so she came to fetch her.
I had another lovely letter from Auntie Mary today and she told me a kind Doctor friend of hers was going to take all you children to a circus. That was very lovely and I expect you were all so excited. I know you would have a lovely time. Auntie also told me you had been to supper with a lady who lives at Rock Beach. It must have been a lovely house. Was it near the big lake Ontario and did you have a sandy beach? You really are a lucky girl to be meeting such nice people, aren’t you? Do you remember when you were at Grosvenor House(2) the night you went away? I told you it would be just like a long holiday for you? I was right wasn’t I? Anne keeps saying she must eat a lot to get a big girl and then she can go to America! But I’m afraid little Anne will never have the chance, but she will forget all about it when you come home. I hope you have received the snapshot of the family by now. We posted it on Feb. 1st. When I get the school papers Auntie has sent I will show them to Miss Bedford and Miss Jenkinson.
Well darling, I want to write to Auntie Rosie, so I will say good-night to you and God Bless you all.
With all my love,
Mummy
