Darling Joan,
As I was not able to get your letter written last evening as it should have been, I have got up early this Saturday morning especially to write it and post it on my way to work. Mummy and the twins and Nanny are not up yet. It is a lovely morning, but it is noticeably colder now that September is here and I expect you are looking forward to the Fall, which is such a beautiful time of the year in America. What a pity it is that Winter comes after it. Still after that comes the Spring and that is always worth having a Winter for.
We had a letter from you yesterday and it had taken the usual time of three weeks to arrive. It was a very good letter and Auntie Mary had added a little note on to the end. Your letters are getting so good and chatty with news that it relieves Auntie Mary from long letter writing, for which she has so little time. So you must keep it up, and it is really good lessons for you, isn’t it. You made all our mouths water with the descriptions of the nice things you have to eat, but we love to hear all about that and to know that you are enjoying yourself so.
There are lots and lots of American soldiers about in Harrow now, and one day, I expect to run into one of them who knows all about your part of the town.
I do so hope that the sore throats did not develop into anything worse. Mostly they don’t if you do something about them in time.
The twins were amused to hear about the dog that can only understand French. It took some explaining.
The twins are now settled down at school again and have a very nice teacher who is called Miss Farsley. They are getting on quite well and don’t seem to have fallen behind very much.
Well it is now time for me to go to work, and I must finish. The twins are now up and dressed and are standing round and chattering so much that I cannot write properly anyway. They have promised me that they will write a little note each, and put it in the envelope with mine.
So I won’t post it on the way to work, but will leave it open to see if they do.
Lots of love from your
Daddy
